Please, excuse cross-postings.

Since we’re developed countries, with serious concerns on transparency, censorship, freedom, etc., I thought I should roughly translate some uncomfortable excerpts of messages distributed in Spanish-speaking listservs on the situation of records and heritage in Honduras, after the quite fascist Micheletti’s coup d’état (I admit I can’t forget Ronald Reagan triggered current situation in Central-America, although I also admit Spain is ignoring this situation):

Ms. Myrna Castro, new Minister of Culture in Honduras, supported by Micheletti and seemingly well-known as defender of physical burning of books, has just dismissed Ms. Natalie Roque and Ms. Rebeca Becerra, heads of National Archives and Book, respectively, and well-known democrats. EH: "Mijn naam is EH.
EH: "Oooo, u bent dus eigenlijk archiefinspecteur?

It now includes the names of 206,731 individuals who applied for and received status as naturalized Canadians from 1915 to 1932. This database is one of the few Canadian genealogical resources specifically designed to benefit those researchers with roots outside of the British Commonwealth. References located in the database can be used to request copies of the actual naturalization records, which are held by Citizenship and Immigration Canada."

International case studies reveal innovative strategies for financing digital resources in the non-profit sector

July 15, 2009, New York and London Tens of millions of dollars, pounds and euros are invested each year by government agencies and private foundations to develop and support digital resources in the not-for–profit sector.

As institutional budgets tighten, will these digital resources be able to survive and thrive? A new study, released today by Ithaka S+R and the JISC-led Strategic Content Alliance, illustrates the varied and creative ways in which leaders of digital initiatives, particularly those developed in the higher education and cultural heritage sectors, are managing to identify sources of support and generate revenue.

Ithaka Case Studies in Sustainability consists of twelve examples of digital resource projects and a final report, Sustaining Digital Resources: An On-the-Ground View of Projects Today, written by Ithaka S+R analystsNancy L. Maron, K. Kirby Smith and Matthew Loy.

The work was jointly funded by JISC’s Strategic Content Alliance in the UK and the National Endowment f…

2010 Daniel Pearl Awards competition

The 2010 Daniel Pearl Awards competition, which honors the world’s best cross-border investigative journalism, has begun accepting entries. The awards are granted by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a project of the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C. Held biennially, the competition is open to any professional journalist or team of journalists of any nationality working in any medium. To be eligible, the investigation — either a single work or a single-subject series — must involve reporting in at least two countries on a topic of world significance. A five-member jury of international journalists selects the winners. Two $5,000 first-place prizes will be awarded. Five additional finalists will each receive $1,000 prizes. Robert McNamara: An Appreciation

Washington, DC, July 9, 2009 - Reflecting on the life of Robert McNamara, who passed away this week on July 6th, the National Security Archive today recognizes the extraordinary role he played in driving scholarly and policy reassessments of some of the most important and contentious U.S. foreign policy events in the latter 20th century. For most of the last two decades of his life, despite enormous criticism, McNamara took the lead in several series of historical investigations that have changed our understanding of the past and generated important discussions about how similar tragedies can be avoided.

Twitter: online cabaret tijdens #MJ

Online cabaret tijdens #MJ. We hoeven niet meer naar een theater. Slotakkoord: zand erover

Royal Gazette Bermuda: Ombudsman recommends Archivist have less contact with public

Citaat
Ombudsman Arlene Brock has recommended that the director of Bermuda Archives be moved to a less front line role after an investigation which found evidence of maladministration.

Saddam Hussein Talks to the FBI

Washington, DC, July 1, 2009 - FBI special agents carried out 20 formal interviews and at least 5 "casual conversations" with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein after his capture by U.S. troops in December 2003, according to secret FBI reports released as the result of Freedom of Information Act requests by the National Security Archive and posted today on the Web at www.nsarchive.org.

Saddam denied any connections to the "zealot" Osama bin Laden, cited North Korea as his most likely ally in a crunch, and shared President George W. Bush's hostility towards the "fanatic" Iranian mullahs, according to the FBI records of conversations from February through June 2004 between Saddam and Arabic-speaking agents in his detention cell at Baghdad International Airport.

2.0 ziekte in culturele sector en overheid

De ziekte:
Ambtenaar 2.0
Archief 2.0
Bibliotheek 2.0
Brandweer 2.0
Erfgoed 2.0
Museum 2.0
Overheid 2.0
Politie 2.0

IlissAfrica: Central Gateway to Information on Africa for Researchers Now Online

Finding relevant literature on a specific African topic or country - this is possible with the “internet library sub-saharan Africa” (ilissAfrica), which is now online and accessible to everyone. Users can search for books, anthologies, journal articles and Internet resources…They are then led directly to the corresponding website or shown at which library the book or journal article can be found. The portal is a joint project of the University Library in Frankfurt and the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies in Hamburg. Both institutions were made responsible for the Special Collections for Africa South of the Sahara by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the 1960s and hence have the largest collections of Africa-related literature in Germany today.
